While attending a recent International City Manager’s Conference I found myself in a session on blogging. The question at the beginning of the forum was “Why Should City Manager’s Blog?” The answer: To Tell Our Story.
I thought, well, we have an E-Network. That’s how we tell our story. We get the word out to the public on important issues, meetings, forums, and other fun stuff. Community wide. Isn’t that enough? Well – as you can tell, no. It’s not enough.
The E-Network is great, but it’s more of a press release. A blog, on the other hand, is more about filling in the gaps. If people don’t have the right information – they WILL make stuff up to fill in the gaps.
The blog is a way for me as your City Manager to elaborate more on the behind the scenes. To talk about some of the efforts that go into particular issues. To talk about the accomplishments of some of our wonderful staff. To talk about communication. The blog is a way to build relationships. And, it’s a way to keep getting the word out. Let’s face it, everyone is really busy these days and short snippets of information is key to keeping everyone on the same page.
Will it be long? No. Will in include links to other sites and locales? Yes. So, sit back, subscribe, and enjoy.
