The City has an E-Network which is a collection of articles on upcoming events, items of interest, road closures, encroachments, links to the website, etc. In fact, if you are reading this you are one of the more than 460 subscribers! The E-Network is sort of a weekly press release on City activities - a techno-newsletter.
A blog, on the other hand, is more of a conversation - a connection to the blogger on key issues, important topics, and the “inside scoop” so to speak on what’s going on. I have always been technology friendly and have my own personal website and blog; however, for each community I have worked for I created an “E-Network” to communicate with the residents and the press. The E-Network is very effective at getting the word out on upcoming issues and events. However, it is less effective as a conversation starter. A blog, is more effective for this purpose.
So, it was with interest that I attended a session at a recent conference on why City Manager’s should blog. (By the way, the attendees were hip on Belvedere’s E-Network and thought it was an excellent tool). The session’s bottom line was that a City Manager should blog to tell the story. Not just to get the word out on events and meetings, but to fill in the gaps between the press release, newsletter, and the streets. So - I created a blog for Belvedere that I will update often. You can subscribe to it and be a part of any ongoing conversations. Welcome!
