On Saturday, the City’s Emergency Preparedness Coordinator and representatives from the Belvedere Police Department, Tiburon Fire Protection District, and Tiburon Police Department hosted a tour of their facilities for interested Commission and Committee members from Belvedere and Tiburon.  

The select group received a “behind the scenes” tour of the Departments, the specific apparatus and equipment used, insight into dispatch and scheduling, and details on preparedness.

Each month, the Belvedere Police Department prepares a Monthly Report of Crime Statistics.  The Report chronicles Felonies, Misdemeanors, Citations, Accidents, Medical Aid, Noise Complaints, Party Complaints, Alarms, Open Doors, Warrants Served, Subpoenas, Personnel on Duty, Other Agency Assists, House Checks, Business Checks, and even the mundane of Patrol Car Mileage.  The reports provide a gauge of criminal activity in the community.  Granted, Belvedere is likely one of the safest communities in the county, but there is still crime.  

FELONIES

For January 2009, there were no felonies (Residential Burglary, Commercial Burglary, Auto Burglary, Construction Site Burglary, Grand Theft) to report.  This time last year there were three – 1 residential, 1 construction site, and 1 grand theft.

MISDEMEANORS

For January 2009, there were 3 reported misdemeanors.  There were two petty thefts –  a small advertising sign was stolen from the front of a business; and a cell phone was taken from a residence.  There was also one malicious mischief – vandalism to a vehicle.   This same time last year there were no reported misdemeanors.

CITATIONS

For January 2009 there were 13 moving violation citations issued and 9 parking citations issued.  This time last year, there were 5 and 16 respectively.

ACCIDENTS

In January 2009, there was 1 Auto versus Auto accident and 1 Hit and Run accident (auto).  This time last year there was only one Auto versus Auto accident reported.

The Belvedere Police Officers cover the community 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.  With the addition of the most recent officer, the Police Department is able to cover most shifts with multiple officers such that rarely is an officer on duty in the City alone.    The City’s website has a link to the Annual Statistics as part of the City’s CitySTATS publication available through this link.

PG&E has the pole stabilized and has restored power to the majority of those affected. However, there remains approximately 50 customers (primarily Belvedere Land Company properties along Beach Road and San Rafael Avenue) that remain without power. PG&E must now wait for MMWD repairs on the water main to be completed before they can permanently restore the pole and power. The initial estimate for completion of the work is around 6 a.m. on December 14.

City Hall Community Center/Founder’s Room is open as a warming center/shelter for those in need. It will be staffed until approximately 7 p.m. MMWD has indicated that they would consider claims for shelter if submitted and the local Lodge at Tiburon has offered rooms to those needing assistance at a reduced rate, call first. The American Red Cross can also assist with emergency shelter if necessary.

The Community Center will likely remain open throughout the night. It will be staffed until approximately 7 p.m. After 7 p.m., the Belvedere Police Department will provide periodic visits to the Center for assistance.

The pole leaned in away from the street toward the immediately adjacent properties, but did not fall. However, the now leaning pole caused significant power outages throughout the community. Pacific Gas & Electric (PG&E) and MMWD responded immediately, as well as, Fire and Police personnel. The City’s Building Official, Lee Braun, who lives in the community and was out of power himself, responded to assess the situation. He immediately contacted emergency officials, to include the myself. He opened the Community Center’s Founder’s Room and provided coffee and heat to those interested.

PG&E’s restoration estimate is approximately 2-3 p.m. today. They were able to “jumper” a few wires to another pole on Acacia Avenue and restore power to several areas in the community. Areas along San Rafael Avenue, Windward, Peninsula Road, and Beach had power restored before 8 a.m. Areas up on the island had power restored as well. Power is still being restored in other areas.

Water has been turned off and MMWD has not yet provided an estimated restoration time. At this time, MMWD is waiting on PG&E to stabilize the power pole and address the power restoration prior to excavating the area to work on the water main.
